The obligatory Dust Storm photo

Lang Parade, Milton just before noon.

I only had my iPhone with me, so that's all you get I'm afraid. :P

I was hoping you were going to do an angle on this event...

I've just seen this on the news, nice ! cough, cough, splutter
  • David de Groot said:
Does a bit doesn't it. Still dusty here at the moment - nowhere near as bad, but it's still about.
Kicking myself for not taking the good kit in today - didn't even think of it when I read the weather reports this morning (I'm not too awake before leaving for work).
  • David de Groot said:
Very much a cough and splutter event. I had to go out for lunch, held a hankie over my face for the two block walk, but still had copious dust up my nose when I got back to the office.
  • looby88 said:
probably finish me off ! Apparently its been pretty bad, not only have you had dust but minor earthquakes, cricket ball sized hailstones, and a tornado thrown in for good measure
  • David de Groot said:
The tornado is news to me, but there have been fires as well, and a heatwave, which has got the snakes out and about too.

I bet Flickr get flooded with dusty photos now. =)
  • Vucko1000 said:
but very good even with iphone.
  • Gareth Gorman said:
This is an omen. Kevin's right and Malcolm's wrong!!!
  • David de Groot said:
Yeah, all year photographers try to avoid dust and then in one day there's more dusty photos than you can poke a stick at.
Didn't turn out bad at this size. :)
  • David de Groot said:
Oh I dunno about that, and I definitely don't believe an ETS will have any beneficial effect at all.
  • aramisfirefly said:
I iPhoned it up today too, I'll probably post a shot up soon too ;)
  • David de Groot said:
Hey, as Chase Jarvis says, the best camera is the one you have with you ;-)

Nice work mate, good shot from the iPhone, I have mine always... but I've not taken a good shot yet.
  • benefit of hindsight said:
should have guessed you'd have an iPhone, David, hehe :-)
Interesting scene - the colour makes it look very odd. A little Martian perhaps.
  • thebookfreak58 said:
I haven't yet tried the camera in my 3GS (got one last week) looks like it's a-lot better than the 3G one!
Nice accurate reflection of todays colours :-)
  • David de Groot said:
The complete lack of control makes it difficult to get exactly what you want, that's for sure, but it seems to perform ok when the light is right.
But of course David :P Coolest gadget on the planet :)
Definitely was very odd being in it, that's for sure.
  • David de Groot said:
Yes Tim, the 3GS camera is quite useful (and waaaay better than the camera on my old Nokia was - 320x240 pixel)
  • ((Kristin)) said:
Wow, that beats anything I've taken on my iPhone, but then again I've got the 3G which has pretty awful photos compared to the 3G S!
  • [ Kane ] said:
Yup, the 3Gs is the future ;P
  • David de Groot said:
I haven't played with the 3G to know the difference. Most of the time it's just for snapshots as it really is a true point-n-shoot.
    Until the 4G anyway :P
  • SkattyKat said:
have an Iphone too & yet to get a decent photo - I thought you could zoom lol.
Nice shot from you though Dave
  • Millisynth said:
It was pretty surreal, wasn't it?
Good shot of the street... for some reason, my street shots didnt look overly impressive.
    Good job here! :)
  • David de Groot said:
But you can zoom Kath - it's called Sneaker Zoom :-)
'twas indeed. I took one from Coronation Drive towards the city and apart from the fact the city wasn't visible, it didn't turn out too well either.
  • James Lagden said:
I don't know, these new iPhone adopters - some of us had them on the original launch day. I'm waiting for the 4GSS!
  • Madiator said:
This is so bad (no I am not referring to the pic :P but to this event). I had never even imagined something like this can happen!
  • Thea M said:
I even left my point and shoot at home yesterday (by accident) and was annoyed that I couldn't get any photos. Another reason why I need an iPhone!
  • David de Groot said:
Ah it's nothing new - I recall dust storms in Amberley (west of Brissie) when I was a lad.
Indeed Thea, and it'll work beautifully with your iMac too :)
  • SkattyKat said:
yes Thea you NEED an Iphone :-)
  • SkattyKat said:
Sneaker Zoom - is that an application in iTunes?
  • David de Groot said:
I hope you're pulling my leg Kath :P
Sneaker zoom is what people that use prime lenses use - if you want to frame closer, you walk closer ;-)
  • SkattyKat said:
lol David - I am embarrassed now - I have never heard that term before .... :-(
    hangs head in shame ..
  • David de Groot said:
D'oh! I thought everyone knew that one. It's like sneaker-net - that transfer of files by copying to removable storage and walking over to the recipient.
  • SkattyKat said:
lol nope - not this little black duck ...
  • Mitch Lahey said:
Looking great David. Reminds me of mars
  • David de Groot said:
Very Mars like - well apart from that civilisation thing :P
