Wild Koala

Spotted in the carpark of Old Petrie Town, Petrie.

Heavily cropped 'cause a 18-55mm lens really doesn't reach very far up a tree.

Thanks Horst, but looking at the group rules I don't think this one qualifies, it's subject is after all the Koala rather than the tree. :) Besides, it's a poor photo, badly backlit and generally difficult to see the koala. I only uploaded it because this was a wild koala, and therefore not an everyday find.

It's a tree hugger no? lol. A great find David. Thanks for sharing it.

    hehehe The infamous dropbear!

Thanks Melissa. Alas, I could not get close enough with the lenses I own to get a decent pic. Too far away for partial metering to make any difference, and there's no spot meter on this body. I considered boosting the brightness in the middle in photoshop, but that just looked bad.

    Awesome find. congrats.

Shame it's such a crap shot though... on my work monitor (which is a bit had-it) you can't see the koala at all. :(

Do you see many of these about town, or is this a rare sighting?
I have really no conception of how common koalas and kangaroos and stuff are.

It's a relatively rare occurrence to see one about town. Unless you live in an area supporting a koala colony, then there's a fair chance you'll spot them fairly regularly. The primary school I went to was in a koala colony area, and we'd see them quite frequently.
Koalas are quite fussy eaters and only like certain varieties of gum trees (eucalypts), so it really depends on where those trees are growing.

I can't take credit for spotting it though. There were some other people in the carpark looking, and then Lea spotted what they were looking at and drew my attention to it. I was too busy unlocking the car with a view to turning the airconditioning on ;-)

    - .. & what do you get when you've accumulated enough brownie points? or is that private? lol! :-D
