Not unless balls grow on trees ! ;-)
I've seen these before, when I was a wee lad, but can't remember which tree they come out of. There were some hoop pines near us, but it doesn't look very pine like (could be wrong though).

It's from the cricket ball tree, isn't it ?
Probably a genetically engineered secret weapon experiment to do with the up and coming Ashes tour !

Glad I am not the only one who thought it looked ball like. ha ha the ashes, not up on cricket but the other half loves it. I think its very odd that the Brits played sooooo much better but because it was a draw we didnt get back these bits of burnt stumps or whatever they are. Still the whole game is a mystery, square legs and silly mid offs...
anyway, good ball photo David.......

Thanks for the info, Lea. I should know these dates better, but here in Germany the think cricket is something played on a lawn with hoops and coloured balls ! :-D

apart from the possibility of using this as a spare cricket ball ;-)- it reminds me very much of avocado kernels. Are ther avocado trees in Australia? (doh...) In fact , do avocados grow on trees at all?

Yes there are large plantations of avocado here, but not in that park (not a single avocado tree to be seen). There were large Hoop Pines, so maybe it's related to those...

Actually, I get these in my yard all the time. They are avocado seeds, and the squirrels drop them as they pass overhead.

I'm almost 100% positive it's not an avocado seed. There were at least two of them, and they were somewhat larger and more uniformly round than any avocado seed I've ever seen.

one way of finding out what it is might be to try and plant it- see what happens. We planted some seeds from exotic fruit and they did ok- not that we'd ever get any fruit on them here, but they have turned into reasonably interesting houseplants
I thought it was a ball !!!
