Visitor

While baking Kara's Birthday cake, a King Parrot decided to grace our veranda.

I managed to get within 2.5m of him but this photo is still very heavily cropped as a 50mm lens isn't really suitable for birding ;-)

    Good work Dave.
For a 50mm lens this is really good.
Nice highlight in the eye too.
    What a special visitor.

I love the orange in this bird - and such beautiful detail.
    A favourite for me.

I'm hanging out for a longer lens... 'twould have been nice to fill the frame with the bird and not had to crop so severely.

Thanks Michelle. I would have called it red personally, but I guess it is kinda orangey... maybe we'll settle for vermilion ;-)

Any lenses in mind for the longer focal length range?

you must live in a really nice area to have birds like that flying around! and willing to let you come that close as well is a bonus

i think with canon you cant go past their 70-200 range of lenses as a start. problem is, once you get one, you always want another :P

btw, how do we put the little avatar things when making a reply to a specific person?

Yep, I reckon the 100-400L is the go initially. A 70-200 2.8L would be nice, but that'll have to wait methinks as I think the longer reach of the 100-400 will trump the faster f/2.8 of the shorter zoom.

Indeed we do. Cedar Creek, just north west of Brisbane. We're nestled up against a mountain and in open temperate rainforest.

As for the little icon things, it's a greasemonkey script (called Flickr Buddy Icon Reply).

    Lovely bird! So vibrant.

I have a 70-200 f/2.8 and love it. Haven't uploaded many shots that I've taken with it. Really should.
  • David de Groot said:
The 70-200 is tempting, but I fear too short initially.

Nice shot David. Will we get to see the cake too? :)
  • David de Groot said:
Well I've got a couple of crappy snapshots I took while she was blowing he candles out. However, this is 3/4 of the cake left, so I might get a decent photo before we eat it all ;-)

    Indeed!

He was quite curious, not particularly worried by me, came back about 3 times after the dogs scarred him off.
