How cool is that, a "wooden bird" :)

They definitely make the best photo subjects. Completely motionless, gives you plenty of time to get a decent composition, focus, etc.. :)

He is lovely, David... he looks quite lonely and sad, but beautiful at the same time (in his own funny way!) :)
David de Groot said: They're an odd bird. I like them, always have. They bring back memories of my childhood when we searched for these guys in the schoolyard trees.
Funny little fellow though. He was all puffed up against the cool winds until we got closer to him, then he stretched out like this to pretend to be a stick and didn't move for the entire time we shot him.

Amazing! I've never seen a bird that looked so much like a tree branch. Great camouflage. :)
David de Groot said:
They're pretty neat eh Brenda ? I need to hurry up and finish the roll of film in the film-slr to see how those shots came out (should be four or five fairly close shots on there from memory).

that's a great story David! What a character he is! Amazing what instinct will do.... poor thing must have been so cold - not being fluffed up, against the wind!
David de Groot said: I presume he was a bit chilly. He's an interesting bird though :)

To be fair I had indeed disturbed him from a nap. Here he is keeping a keen eye on me while trying to look like he isn't.
I would have been about 4m from him at this point.

Oh how cool! I can't believe you spotted that. See? You DO have great eyes! On our BrisWalk today you spotted everything. I just heard them!
I saw this guy on David Attenborough's Life Of Birds BBC series - very cool creature, really becomes part of the tree. You should check out the video.
David de Groot said: I've spent a lot of time peering at things in the bush. One might say that with all the things that can kill you roaming about, it pays to be able to see them before they see you ;-)
Not that Tawny Frogmouths are known to be vicious.
