Summer Berry Clafoutis

We had a late, filling lunch today so dinner consisted of dessert only - Summer Berry Clafoutis with Ice Cream :)

It's basically a standard Strawberry or Cherry Clafoutis, but substitute summer berries (blue berries, red currants, black berries and raspberries) for the Strawberries or Cherries.

Yep dessert for dinner Margot - It doesn't happen very often, but sometimes you just have to do these things :)

not made this so will have to give it a go, one of my favourite puddys just has to be summer pudding, made with thick bread , none of that weedy thin variety, and lots of yummy fruit, anything berry wise, so yummy! send us a bit- I'm guessing it all went , yep it did... : ( licks screen...........
    ....................................................just kidding !!

sometimes -quite often I will just have something like custard or ice-cream for dinner..or even just fruit
  • David de Groot said:
Like a bread an butter pudding but with berries instead of jam ?

hehehe there's one slice left, but not for long, it's going tonight.

    What's this "or" surely it's custard AND ice-cream ;-)
  • looby88 said:
this is like bread and butter puddy or my summer pudding is? easily confuddled you know, never tried custard AND ice cream, have had ice-cream and cream, disgustingly indulgent that is !! will get you summer puddy recipe if you need it, have got to make one now !!

my fave ice-cream at the mo is creme brulee- oh its so good : D
  • David de Groot said:
Your summer pudding - is it like bread and butter pudding ?

I've just finished the last of the clafoutis (with ice-cream and a marshmallow bunny). :)

cream-brulee ice-cream ??? Sounds yummy, but I can't imagine it's anything like an actual creme-brulee, I mean, where's the caramalised sugar top ? and the not-quite runny consistency underneath ?
  • looby88 said:
the ice creme is by carte d'or, its pretty good, quite a lot like it, and it has a crunchy sugar top too!
anyway, take a good sized pudding bowl, I think I use a 2pt, line it with white bread, I take off my crusts but its not obligatory, overlap them and line the bottom too. Now cook, ever so gently such goodies as blackcurrants redcurrants with if you wish sugar to taste, for about3 mins. I also add strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and cherries ( stoned - they feel the pain less that way ), these I dont cook. Anyway, whatever fruit like that that I have. Not adverse to using a bit of frozen if I have it either - scandal - oh sacrilidge say the purists.Pour fruit into puddy bowl, top with bread so its nice and sealed. Put a plate on top - it needs to sit on the bread and way down with a small child or a tin of beans etc.about 2Ibs weight is ideal- but whatever !! leave in fridge overnight. To eat -turn out, there should be no white bread showing, should all be soaked with juice. I make sure of that before I finish it at the adding fruit stage, you can off course reserve any liquid to pour over at this stage, somewtimes I have had to resort to making more juice as too much white bread showing. suggest you use a glass bowl! I am sure there are less garbled recipes for this on the internet..... !!I use white bread, never tried it with brown !!

Sounds very tasty, and obviously absolutely nothing like bread and butter pudding. :)
Might have to try this myself at some stage. We get berries for a lot longer here than you do there (usually two seasons per yet - at least it is for strawberries anyway), but they're still somewhat expensive (the other berries that is - strawberries get down to about $2 a punnet at the height of the season).
  • looby88 said:
we have the advantage of growing our own blackcurrants, blueberries, tayberries blackberries and raspberries, if I grow strawberries the dog or the birds eat them ! We also drive out to farms and pick our own, so that helps as well !
  • David de Groot said:
Well I have a small strawberry plant on the back veranda, it's only produced one fruit so far, but we'll see how it goes - the plant itself looks healthy.

I also want to plant blue berries, but I have no idea if they'll do any good in this climate. Blackberries are classed as a noxious weed here, so I can't plant any of those. What....is a tayberry ?
  • looby88 said:
its a cross, blackberry/raspberry I think, yummy !! we have our blueberries in tubs, ericaceous compost as they dont like limey soils, its not very limey here, its just easier also !
  • David de Groot said:
    Well it sounds yummy :)

Hmm, blueberries in pots... I wasn't sure how big they got. As for limey, I'm sure several American's would disagree ;-)
  • looby88 said:
LOL !!! well it kept them scaby free- have I got the right disease there, ohh history lessons so long ago and ill remembered, there is such a lot of history with the jolly old UK as well - !! well back to blueberries, much more of the now !! About 5 feet eventually although there are some more compact varieties appearing around the 3 foot mark. then off course there are secautares- that doesnt look quite right !!I need to hit the sack as they say !!
  • David de Groot said:
Close, Scurvy is what you mean. :)

So I'll want a large pot for the blueberries then... or alternatively just try them in the ground :)

this could be helpful, ours are happier in pots, they are not huge pots either, but we will pot on as required, they are quite pretty shrubs anyway. we have added some of that water retaining gel to our pots- helps store water in the soil. wishing you success and yummy muffins etc !! lovely fresh fruit salads etc !
  • Margot- said:
Argh, STOP it already you two! I can feel my waistline expanding as I read your posts. Hehehe...just kidding! You may continue to torture me with your dessert talk. (o^^o)

    Lea, that's a good strategy. :o)
  • David de Groot said:
That looks like a very useful link indeed Helen (haven't read all of it yet, eyes are too tired to focus properly).

Hehehehe Better watch out Margot or I'll be forced to make another dessert just so I can photograph it! ;-)
  • looby88 said:
I've got a half eaten apple crumble, but its not that photogenic !!!
  • David de Groot said:
You could always take a picture of yourself eating the apple crumble Helen ;-)

Or scoop some up on a fork and post it to the fork group!
  • looby88 said:
LOL!! well right this minute I'm feeling rather not myself- well my buddy icon is anyway, rather grey and down at the mouth, seems flickr is having problems !! maybe a bit of creative photography would be good!! never eat it personally, the crumble that is- even though I made it !!!
  • David de Groot said:
I noticed your icon is looking a bit "plain jane".
In fact it's looking a lot like this:
    Flickr Face

I love crumble, apple, apricot, or peach - they're all good :)
  • looby88 said:
LOL !!! love it, you make me laugh !!!
  • David de Groot said:
:) I've often been tempted to use it as an icon - feel free to do so it you want.
  • looby88 said:
that is very kind of you, it 's great ! well spotted ! seems like there is a problem with the buddy icon, I wasnt sure how to shrink a photo to 48x48 pixels as it seems its the only way to get a buddy at the moment- hence this rather er strange one ! I may use yours later though !!
