Student Protest

Brisbane CBD.

Approx. 100 Students from High Schools across Brisbane gathered in town today for a protest against the Iraq War, Inaction dealing with Global Warming and to decry President George W. Bush as a Terrorist and unwanted in Australia.

The turnout was not as large as one might have expected given that students usually jump at the chance to skip out of school. The Year 12 students though were sitting their Core Skills tests today so that would account for lower numbers to some extent.

President Bush is currently in Sydney attending the APEC 2007 Summit.

The whole shoot is over here.

I wonder how many of them actually had a valid opinion on what they were protesting about? Or if they just saw it as an excuse to skip school?

Several got up and spoke (maybe a half dozen), but I'm thinking a decent number found it a good excuse to be out of school.

I saw a few of them on the news earlier. Looks like you missed out on seeing all the Kelvin Grove kids that were there, the news guys pretty much only showed them before.

Also, i like the number of police in the background. Wonder how many of the kids got done for truancy :P

I did see some Kelvin Grove students about, but none at the first stage of the protest or on the march (I left the march at Ted's to drop some film in).
At one stage I counted about 25 police officers scattered around the place. That's roughly a one in four ratio of police to protesters.

What makes me wonder is, how many year 12 students were they and in effect, skipping the second day of the QCS test?
  • David de Groot said:
Most of the students seemed to be younger than Year 12 or ring-in's of post school age (or alternatively not likely to be sitting the QCS anyway).

Well it was a cold, rainy day. Not exactly the greatest high school protest weather!

Well it wasn't rainy while I was there. Sure, threatening rain, but no actual rain. Might have later in the day though.
