    Thirtysomething I am too, but I went straight to tapes and CDs (in fact only a few tapes, more CDs).

    I avoided buying tapes as they degraded in quality. Thus I bought LPs and then recorded them to tape for listening, so most of my albums have only been played maybe a dozen times :) I then moved to CDs once I could afford them. As for age, I'm on the young side of thirtysomething ;)

    Note sure how many Northern Hemisphere types will recognise most of those (Dire Straits is pretty universal though).
