Found in one of the upstairs rooms of Old Government House.
This would have originally had a light fixture hanging from the centre of it. This sort of ornate plaster mould is typical of the period of architecture.

i love these things. i found one today on the ceiling of the bacto lab at ARI - a little less elaborate and made of pressed metal. the ceiling is being replaced as the metal is corroding (possums in the ceiling-space) so i'll have to get some photos of it soon.
They're great aren't they ? My grandparents had them in a house they moved from the Gold Coast to Wivenhoe (it also had awesome bathrooms, but that's another tale).
Ah the pressed metal ceiling is something rarely seen these days.
