New Kit

Well I picked up the new kit today :)

Canon 400D

18-55 kit zoom lens

50mm f/1.8 II prime lens

2Gb Sandisk Extreme III CF card

BG-E3 Battery Grip

Yay! Now I'm impatiently waiting for the battery to charge...

I might do a better "product shot" later tonight at home.

Thanks Gayle - I was so excited I swung by the store at 8:30 am today figuring it wouldn't be open but having to check anyway, and they were!

Rae, new gadgets are always fun :) (taps foot, still waiting for battery to finish charging...)

Let me know what ya think of it.
I'm looking to buy the 400D as well.

Swwwwwweet! Nice rig...even if it is a Canon. :-P

I'll be expecting some pretty nice 10MP sharp shots with that 50mm prime (the Nikkor equivalent is also optically excellent).

Now I want to go buy photo gear....waaaaaahhhh!!! (And it's lunchtime too - maybe I'll just go hang out at G&V Imaging for a couple hours.)

Well good for you Dave, I'm envious, we look forward to seeing some exciting photos in the near future mate!

    woohoo - gadget pr0n :-)

too many Canonites in the bris group now!!

perhaps an impromptu flickrmeetup as an excuse to get our grubby paws on your new kit!!

    Cecily, First impressions are:

    * It's slightly heavier than the S2 IS with adapter tube, filter and tripod qr plate. But still very manageable.
    * fast - fast startup, fast focus, fast reaction
    * the battery grip is really a nice addition, can take 6xAA size batterys or two of the Li-ION batteries (one supplied with camera).
    * The LCD is crisp and colour/contrast excellent

Now if only it would stop threatening to rain outside, I'd go shoot something more interesting than things on my desk. ;-)
  • David de Groot said:
Thanks Mike, even if you do use a Nikon ;^)

But didn't you just get a new lens a few weeks back ? (oh no! I mentioned lenses... have to save up for a decent long tele)

Thanks Kev! I just need to find something exciting to shoot now ;)

We'll end up like the Sydney photobloggers soon Albert, apparently they're mostly Canon too. Although Pam (shanrosen) recently bought a D80 (which is also a very nice camera).
  • leadegroot said:
You... took a photo of the new camera with the old camera?
Darling, you know I love you, but that is just so twisted!
    :-P
(Hurry home so I can take possession of *my* new camera :-P)
    Hehehe
  • The Sage of Shadowdale said:
    Yes darling...do hurry home. :D
    LOL

Cool - family cross-comments. Some of the puzzle pieces are starting to fall into place. ;-)

@Lea, don't go for that Canon crap (I'm afraid you husband really is twisted). Go get yourself a real camera (one with a Nikon badge on it). If you can't afford it that's an easy one: one day, when David's at work, take his 400D, sell it & buy a Nikon D80 (you'll even have a little cash left over - treat yourself to a new pair of shoes or better yet a nicer lens such as the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4). Who said I was sneaky?

How exciting David!! New cameras are so much fun!!

Seen in my contacts's photos. (?)
  • rainforest_harley said:
Looks good David , you should have let the camera shoot it self in the mirror :-)
  • rainforest_harley said:
    Does it play Mp3's :-)
  • The Sage of Shadowdale said:
A Canon shooting itself...yes, that sounds like an excellent idea. :-D
  • David de Groot said:
Bah! Bah! I say! shooting itself...

Actually RH, there aren't any mirrors around here except in the loos and I'm not that fanatical to take a camera out in the public toilets.

Thanks Jill - much fun indeed :)

Besides Mike, the D80 is more expensive than the 400D by about $300 - $500. They seemed to be priced about the same as a Canon 30D.
  • leadegroot said:
    @Mike :)
Hehe, no I get the old camera, and given my level of blindness, I don't have any envy for spending money on one.
Besides, it would be hard to sell the new one while he is at work as it is glued to him like a clingy child. He takes it everywhere :)
(Yes, I can verify the rumours that it even goes to the smallest room in the house. If you look, there are photos to prove it ;))
So, you're saying I shouldn't have given him the money for the 400D? Hmmm...
  • donnamatrix said:
    am very jealous. :)
  • Mark McCowen said:
Okay, I'm totally jealous too. I have the 350D but would like to upgrade to the 400. But first I need a macro lens and maybe a fisheye. I wish this camera stuff wasn't so expensive.
  • David de Groot said:
As well you might be Donna :) (me? smug? never!)

The 350D is a nice bit of kit too Mark. As they say, bodies come and go, but lenses are for life. I agree with the expense though. I couldn't get a long telephoto this time round. I'll be saving for a 70-200 f2.8 L IS or maybe the 100-400 f4L IS, but that's going to take some time.

Don't drool on that S3 David!

    Chris - Mwhahahahahahaaha!
  • The Sage of Shadowdale said:
    Very mature David. :)

And I stand corrected on the price of the D80 vs 400D. At d-d-photographics the D80 body is $1369 and the 400D body is $1139. I thought the 400D was around about the $1500-$1600 mark. I eat humble pie. (Although the 30D body is $1769 so it's still in another price bracket. For what it's worth, since I won't be able to afford another body for some time I may as well save for the D200 which, in terms of quality and features is not far short of the 5D but is pretty close to the price of a 30D (ie. about $2100); now that's value for money. (Yes, I know the 5D is a full size sensor, but that about all it's got on the D200....says he who has never played with either.)

Anyway, congrats on the new family member - enjoy him while he is young (or is it a her?) and don't let it out of your sight. ;-)
  • rainforest_harley said:
David I had to put the lens cap on the right way up :-)
  • David de Groot said:
It will go with me everywhere (as did the S2 before it) :)

I almost bought from d-d-photographics, but the lack of manufacturer warranty and that the purchase wouldn't qualify for the current Canon cash-back offer, coupled with the fact that I got a really good cash deal at a shop I could walk into in town, made my mind up for me.

And since I did get a really good deal - anyone in Brissie needing new kit, trundle into Rainer's Camera House on Adelaide St and see Michael.
  • David de Groot said:
    hahaha Thank RH :)

I was so excited having just unpacked it, I didn't notice the cap was upside down until after I'd uploaded the shot.
  • donnamatrix said:
    smug bastard. :)

I'll get a new camera soon enough... and then... then! We'll see who's laughing!
  • David de Groot said:
hehehe Sounds like an Austin Powers villain - "Smug Bastard".
  • The Sage of Shadowdale said:
Well, another Flickr acquaintance of mine (Xenedis) just got a 5D, so I've lost interest in your little 400D.
    :P

But it also means I'm now lusting after the Nikon D2H to rival Xenedis' 5D. Arrrrggggg....keeping up with the Jones' can be expensive - I'd better just give up and stick with my tiny D50.
  • David de Groot said:
He's got some very nice glass to go with that 5D too. Hmmm a full frame sensor, I'm undecided about that. Sure it's more resolution, but I kinda like the 1.6x crop factor at the moment, not that I'd complain at all if someone were to give me a 5D ;-)
  • Maki_C30D said:
    yay! congrats!!:)
  • David de Groot said:
    Thanks Maria :)
  • Margot- said:
Wahooo!!! CONGRATULATIONS, David! Couldn't wait for Christmas, huh? ;-)
  • David de Groot said:
    Quite so Margot :)

Besides, if one is to take decent Christmas shots, one needs to know how to use it first ;-)
  • Chris Blomquist said:
I declare that statement 100% infallible.

(I use similar logic myself much too often!)
  • Margot- said:
Ah...what a good excuse, David. I'm really enjoying your new photos very much.
  • David de Groot said:
    @Chris - hehehehehe

Thanks Margot - I'm enjoying taking them :)

    i have 350d with 28-135is usm
    i want buy bge3 ... coming soon ...
  • David de Groot said:
The BGE3 is really useful, especially if you
    a) take portrait oriented shots
    b) do long shoots out in the field - two batteries are better than one :)
    c) have larger hands, as the extra size helps a lot.
