Inside the Cave

at the Natural Bridge (or Arch).

This is a three shot AutoStitch, but I'm not that happy with it. I unfortunately overexposed the sunlit areas and thus could not correct that afterwards. Obvioulsy I need a lot more practice in high contrast areas.

    wow! beautiful place!!
    did you swim too?

Thanks Maria, it is indeed a beautiful place. There's a colony of little bats in the cave too, and at night you can come down to see the glow worms (not that I have, yet). And no, I didn't swim (we didn't brings togs and towels with us, and the water is freezing).

Nice one Dave you will have to come down more often and practice mate .
I'm not suggesting you need it, thats a great shot and good work!

beautiful place... looks so big under there!

Thanks Kev. It's still a pretty poor shot. But then it was bright sunshine outside, and quite dark inside. I think I should have exposed for outside and then used an array of well placed flashes for inside (but of course I only have one flash and no remote setup).

It is big Alison :) Quite a neat place to visit. I'd love to come after dark and see the glow-worms.

intriguing "glow worms'...would love to see their photos in the near future;-)

As would I Maria, but it's unlikely to be from my camera. It's a 2 hour drive from home to there, so I'd really need to be staying somewhere closer and then visit them. Maybe at a later date at some time.

    This is fantastic too, David!
Must be seen large. I'd love to see that with my own eyes someday!
I'd like to see the bats and glow worms too.

    This gets a trophy!

It's really not a good photo, but I had to post something from the trip. Thanks for the Trophy though, even if it is undeserved ;-)

The bats were neat (there were awake and flitting about during the day while we were there) and I'd love to see the glow worms myself too :)

Well if you ever make it down here for a visit, we'll happily take you down there to see it yourself.

Well I still like it on the second look David. Ok - the outside is a bit over-exposed, but I just like this sort of theme, so for me that outweighs it.

    Go the glow worms!!

Hey we must go to all the same places. I was there about a week ago. I left the cam at home tho, what was I thinking???
  • David de Groot said:
Oh well I'm glad someone likes it David :)

Did you see the glow worms Alex ? And yes, what were you thinking ??? Leaving the house without a camera !!!
  • Alex Rixon said:
Yeah I saw quite a few glow worms, just from the landing area. We saw a few of the little bats getting around as well.

No idea why I left it at home, we went for a quick recon for our weding at Mt Warning and found our way back past natural bridge.
  • David de Groot said:
No glow worms visible while we were there, but it was the middle of the day after all. I haven't been to Mt Warning yet, but that whole area is just beautiful, and a lovely setting for a wedding :)
We had ours in a cave (Jenolan Caves, west of Sydney).
  • Alex Rixon said:
I was there in the middle of the day too, but you have to look right at them to see them.
They are deep in the little holes in the roof.
  • David de Groot said:
Hmmm, now you have me worried... I took a couple of shots with flash (relatively strong - external 188A Speedlite). Hopefully they were deep enough in the roof to not be bothered by that!

I had similar contrast issues when I photographed Natural Bridge (Arch) many moons ago (and also froze-my-tits-off whilst swimming there). I'm not sure how you would overcome the contrast issue in-camera, but combining elements from two differently exposed RAWs might be a post-based solution.

Jenolan Caves: what a wonderful place. I've not been there since childhood (1974) but I'm sure it would have made a most memorable location for a wedding. Perhaps one day you might share a photo of the occasion with us?

Hmmm, good point. An HDR would probably do it, shame I didn't take enough shots of the right type to manage that. Oh well, that'll be an excuse to go back!

I've got some photos (badly scanned) up here. Eventually I'd like to scan the negatives and clean them up a little, but don't have a negative scanner.

Good year '74 by the way... lots of rain, and I started my babyhood :)
