  I'm amazed this crate could manage to open the boot on its own. I mean, then don't have opposable thumbs, or even any thumbs, do they?

  I think it capitalised on the the already open boot actually, because as you've so rightly pointed out, they're lacking thumbs of any description - so watch out for your thumbs when in the presence of red crates as it's obvious they're looking for some!
