On the way home tonight, I found an unattended fire. It was about 4-5m long by 3m wide. The regulations for fires state that any fire over 2m in any direction needs to be cleared with the fire dept.
I stopped to check it out, called out for anyone to see if it was really unattended, swatted out a couple of small flare-ups near the edge and had a good look about for at least 10 mins before calling the fire dept.
I kept an eye on it, and about 1/2 hr after I had arrived a bloke and his Mrs wandered down. I asked if they knew anything about it, and was told in no uncertain terms that it was theirs.
I informed them I'd called the fire dept. at which point said person became somewhat abusive and told me to leave. I moved away some distance and waited a bit longer but then decided to head home and call in again to update the fire dept. who informed me that I'd done the right thing and that the burnoff wasn't approved.
A bit of an adventure for a friday evening anyway :)

My goodness - this is how forest fires get started. What were they thinking?! Good for you for 'doing the right thing'. It must be a Friday thing...it's Friday morning here and we've had such a snow/ice storm yesterday/overnight that the fire + police depts. are asking people not to leave their homes due to falling ice, downed power lines etc. It's not even safe really to get photos!
Precisely Melissa. Some people are just a bit lax about this sort of thing, but you really can't afford to make mistakes out here where there's sufficient fuel for it to get nasty in not much time at all.
Sounds like you're in for an exciting day!
Sounds like you had an exciting Friday evening. Some people just don't give a damn do they?
Sure did! Yeah some people are either unaware of the rules or think they don't apply to them, but this person at least will now know they do (and so will his wallet methinks).
WOW talk about irresponsible, with the havoc that bushfire's have been inflicting they do a stupid thing like that. One really must question some peoples sanity sometimes
Well Done David!!
There is no excuse as far as I'm concerned, and then to leave it unattended.
Burn them at the stake I say!
Thanks for the support guys :)
Yes Kev, quite stupid indeed. The guy didn't look like an ol' Cocky so I can only presume he's somehow attached to the development.
I'm thinking he earned himself a decent fine or at least the cost of the callout.
well done you and plonker to them !!
Thanks Helen :)
Good for you David, it amazes me how many ignorant people there are out there and explains why we have so many bush fires.
Some people are just a waste of oxygen.
I hope the firies gave it to them well and good! :-)
Quite amazingly they were burning again the following day, but this time they seemed to be attending it and had a truck there, so maybe the firies gave them what for and they followed the rules afterwards ? Dunno.
I wouldn't have stopped or reported it if there was someone there looking over it in the first place.
