Cycad Cone

I came across a large cycad flowering (fruiting?) in the Botanic Gardens in town today. Here is a closeup of the top of the pod.

The whole pod/fruit/flower/thing was about 2 feet tall.

Nice shot, David! This is Cycas revoluta (Sago Cycad). I've seen giant ones in Okinawa last year. I think the pointed cone is male and the roundish cone is female. Or maybe it's the other way around. This cone looks spiny.

Would also make a nice abstract shot up even closer. Wonderful geometry.

Thanks Margot :) I thought it might have been a sago cycad (or sago palm as they are incorrectly named here), but the leaves weren't quite as close together as I was expecting.

David, this is the third (and closest) shot I took, but yes, I could see it as being an interesting texture crop.

Thanks Kev - amazing what one finds on a stroll through the park.

    Fantastic pattern.

It's neat isn't it? I reckon if viewed from above, it'd be a spiral.

You should try it from above.

Ah if only it were that easy Mike... the cycad is about 2.5m in diameter and this cone is in the middle.
