I've opted for a square crop on this one, partially because I needed to crop anyway to remove Johnno's shoulder, and partly because the scene was just too busy with the full 3:2 aspect.
Taken during Day #1 of the Xenedis Visit Brisbanites Flickr Meetup weekend.
And as an aside, at the time of posting this shot, my stream had reached 20,213 views :) (just noticed)

when or how do you know that a shot will come out better in BW?
love this candid shot!!
Ummm... I just kinda take a punt at the time Maria. You know, you look at a scene and think, that'd probably make a decent b&w photo, and shoot accordingly. Thanks :)
I should start thinking this way;-)
It's the only way to do it... (well ok, it's not, but I find there's a b&w mood that I get into, and it all falls into place).
ahhh black and white. This is a wonderful street photo. I like how no one in the shot is aware of your presence.
A definite favourite.
Helps that we had been shooting around this area for about 10 to 15 minutes before I took this one, so we'd become part of the surrounds, out in the open, but relatively invisible. I also composed while Johnno was standing in front of me and shot as soon as he wandered off (a bit too soon, thus the gratuitous cropping).
This is a great shot Dave - and don't apologise about the crop, the shot looks great how it is.
Thanks Daniel (or is that Anita posting?). Anyway, yeah I guess the square crop works pretty well - reminiscent of those older square film formats.
"reminiscent of those older square film formats."
6x6 medium format is still cool. When I first saw this one, I thought it had a medium format look to it. Just made me more excited about hopefully picking up a Yashica mat or something like that soon. :)
I think the square format is perfect for this one. Really focuses attention where it needs to be, I reckon. I really like deciding on B&W on the spot - it is a challenge I enjoy to try to adjust your view of the world to be B&W as you are walking around.
Greg shoots 6x6 quite a bit, some really nice pictures from his Rollei.
Definitely Chris, although I have converted a few shots later to b&w, I generally decide at the time of shooting that it'll be a b&w shot. Really changes one's view of the situation and makes you focus more on tone and contrast than colour.
"focus more on tone and contrast than colour" - yeah, this is what I meant, but you said it much better! I find it sometimes hard to switch between thinking in colour and thinking in B&W. It's kind of nice to go out on a particular day and say 'I am doing B&W today' - after a few hours of thinking like this you really start to view the world differently.
Couldn't agree more Chris. In fact I've done that myself before - i.e. go all b&w on a particular outing.
