I experimented by taking a shot out of the train window at another train. The idea was to get an in-focus train but blurred background.
This didn't work to plan, so I played with it in photoshop instead and came up with this.

Excellent photoshop skills! Looks like you had a lucky accident by not catching a blurring background. I love how busy this shot is. So much stuff to explore!
Thanks Mark, nothing too flash really. The original colour shot was busier still, but not in a good way.
I really like the patterns that tracks make. Have you tried a similar shot without the other train? The ghostly effect of the reflection off your window is great too.
I must say I haven't. The Bowen Hills rail-yards are usually of only passing interest as I go past them every day. Maybe I should look at them differently. The real trick is finding a window in the train without a myriad of scratches in it from destructive little brats.
Looks great David!! I love how you have highlighted the train amongst that jungle of poles and wires in the background!

Thanks Jill - 'twas an attempt to salvage a rather unremarkable photo, and it seems to have come out ok :)
Interesting effect - very pleasing!
A good example of mixing mono & colour to improve a composition.
For a still train and blurred background use a slow-ish shutter & try panning (preferably on a tripod) along with the train's movement.
Having since seen earlier pan shots in your stream, I realise my above advice is redundant.
Thanks David :)
Thanks Iain. This shot was taken at 1/40 but I was in another train travelling at about the same speed as the one I shot. Not much room for panning inside a train carriage either ;-)
