Cattle Egret in Flight

I stopped on the way into work this morning to try to get some shots of the Cattle Egrets in breeding colours near Samford.

However, the cows are somewhat skittish and moved off when I approached, which meant the cattle egrets also took off.

I managed to track this one and shoot it in flight, not as sharp as I'd like, but quite reasonable all the same.

Thanks Maria, birds in flight aren't very easy to shoot, especially when they're trying to get away! ;)

I agree.... very difficult subject. Nicely done... I like how the tips of the wings curve up!

Had I had time, I might have forced a faster exposure in the hopes of cutting down on the white blow-out and maybe obtaining a little more sharpness. But then in the heat of the moment it didn't occur to me to do so.

Birds in flight are indeed hard to get. I've all but given up on trying as I tend to shoot slow film in morning light. No fast exposures for me. But just to watch the big birds and how graceful they can be is reward itself.

    Nice shot here.

Thanks Mike :) I'm not ready to give up yet. I'm hoping the move to a dSLR later in the year might improve it a bit, the AI Servo AF should make tracking a little easier if nothing else.

    what's an AI Servo AF?

That's when the computer in the camera tries to refocus on a moving object by recalculating where the object will be. Basically it does a better job of keeping a tracked object in focus :)
