Yesterday I noticed a fair bit of smoke coming from down the road from the other side of the valley, just up from Mt O'Reilly. Today, it was still smoky and on closer inspection had spread somewhat. On the way back from shopping we toodled up Halls Rd and had a closer look. The bush fire brigade was there busily keeping the fire away from the nearby houses and livestock, but I can't imagine they can do much more than that as there is a lot of bushland and they have very limited resources.

Now we really see why they have to do those controlled burn-offs.
This looks not too big, fortunately, but it must be scary when they start getting out of control.
It's bigger than it looks in this picture. That flair-up on the right is a whole tree bursting into flames (about 25m to 35m tall). The flame front stretches well over a km, maybe 2 (I'm not that good a judge of distance).
I'll be keeping an eye on it's progress over the next day or two as it's only 3 or 4 kms from home but on the other side of the valley.
I used to live in Draper (you'd probably know it being a Samford man) and everytime there would be a bush fire all of our tanks would fill up with ash and it would leave the grossest taste in the water!
Lets just hope the fire is almost out!
Draper eh ? I went to school with a Draper from Draper :) It's really only just down the road a bit from here.
We've got filters and covers on our tanks, but admittedly it's not rained since. There's still smoke out near the golf course, but the latest reports where that is was well under control.
ahh well perhaps his family was the one that had the letterbox with draper family written on the side of it...what a small world...
More than likely, I think they were the last Drapers in Draper.
ooh err !
Quite - luckily it seems to be all out now :)
