Bush Stone Curlew - Head Crop

This is an 100% crop from the previous Curlew picture to better highlight the very large eyes these birds have. This one was trying to look threatening as it was actively protecting it's chick.

Common Names: Bush Stone Curlew, Southern Stone-curlew, Bush Curlew, Bush Thicknee, Willaroo, Weeloo

Scientific Name: Burhinus grallarius

Habitat & Range: Open forest, plains and paddocks throughout Australia.

flat top & big eyes, so cute!!!:)

I think you should post this to this group:) What BIG EYES you have!
  • David de Groot said:
David, they are indeed very odd. Huge eyes, long skinny legs with backward knees, and some really good camouflage. But the chick is very fluffy and cute :)

Thanks Maria, they definitely are big eyes - it's also interesting to note that one eye is more dilated than the other, presumably due to different light levels.

I think that is just so cute.....not looking threatening at all :)
  • David de Groot said:
Thanks Kitty, I reckon any animal with a face like that would have a hard time looking threatening. :)

Cool shot. This bird really failed miserably in his effort to look threatening ;)

Thanks Volker :) Yes it isn't exactly the most threatening bird out there to humans. Not sure what the rest of the bird world thinks of it, but since they seem to successfully nest on the ground without the local cats eating them, they must have something going for them.

I love these birds... I see them around my suburb at night sometimes (hence the big eyes). Their cry is bloodcurdling. This is such a great capture of their expression!

They're great aren't they ? And so well camouflaged when they want to be.
