Dacelo leachii.

These guys are impressive to see in flight with their very blue wings and blue back.

Nice, That's pretty different looking than the run of the mill kookaburra's we get around here. The yellow color in the old tree is a nice touch.

They don't laugh - they just giggle.
I hit one of these with the Retro Rocket once ...

Great catch David. I remember you pointing one of these guys out at Girrween that time.

Sure is. I always look out for these guys when heading north (as I've not seen any in the Greater Brisbane area). Supposedly they occur as far south as 50km SW on Brisbane, but I've not seen them there.
Aye, not a bad effort :)
Thanks! You should get these out your way.
Indeed :P Alas, all Kookaburras aren't very road-smart (not as bad as Galah's, but still pretty daft around cars).
Hmmm, yeah there may have been one there. I'd forgotten that.

Ah well keep an eye out ;-)
They do look a bit more evil than the standard ones ;-)
Thanks James :) I was hoping for an in-flight shot, but it didn't happen.
    Thanks Kath :)

Wow. Looks fantastic in large. Very funky looking bird.

Pretty nifty eh ? His head feathers wouldn't usually be pointing up like that - caught in the breeze.

quite graphic, almost abstract. Nice work Dave

The late afternoon sun certainly changed the feel of the shot, that's for sure.

These guys have always had me liking them more than the Laughing Kooka. I just can't resist the colour. Great shot.
  • David de Groot said:
They definitely have a more striking colour scheme than the regular Laughing variety.
