Aah, so that is what a kookaburra looks like... a bit like a cross between a woodpecker and a kingfisher!? I learn something new every day here on Flickr!
David de Groot said: It is indeed a Kingfisher - a very large one. This is the not as common and slightly smaller Blue-Winged version, as opposed to the more common Laughing Kookaburra.
Some more Kookaburra photos.

Do you live in a world heritage area or something David - what with the lovely waterfals and all sorts of critters! :-)
Just need a meet at your house! :-)
David de Groot said: Pretty close :) We're right next door to Mt Glorious and the associated National Parks. However, this fellow above is from near my parent's place way up the coast.

Hey! That is the one I ran over with the Retro Rocket somewhere up north! He flew across the road, low and so close to making it. I was going around 100 km/h and this fellow just appears in front of the windscreen. I remember, I thought that the windscreen was going to burst in a cloud of glass and feathers - but luckily for the mighty Retro Rocket, he missed the windscreen, and the car was OK.
And the bird - oh well - the Retro Rocket is fitted with a snorkel ...
*WHAM*
David de Groot said: Yeah I've noticed Kookaburras (of either variety) aren't that road-safe. Unlike crows - rare to see a crow hit by a car.

David de Groot said: Thanks - 'twould have been nicer to get closer but he flew off when I got out of the car.
