Attempt #8

Playing with "high speed" photography.

By doing this essentially in the dark, the shutter speed is governed by the flash speed, regardless of the actual shutter speed.

To take this, I setup the camera on my tripod for 1 sec at f/9, self-timer mode. Once the shutter opened, I dropped the slice of leek and when I thought it had hit the water, I set-off the flash that I was holding above the glass.

Wow, this is awesome! Hehehe...a slice of leek...something I would never think of using, but it turned out great and made it even interesting.

I was hunting around for something to drop in the glass that wouldn't matter if I missed and it fell over the veranda railing ;-) Since we had stew with dumplings for dinner, I had the end of a leek available.

You just had to tell me about the stew with dumplings. Now I am hungry. Got to find something to eat! :o)
  • David de Groot said:
Well if I wasn't so hungry I would have taken a photo of it too, but I ate it before I thought of taking photos ;-)

    Thanks Ana :)

Fun with flash - I've been reading the Strobist blog of late.

Neat isn't it ? and relatively easy to do.

I'm impressed! Reminds me of an ad for Pizza Hut where they throw the fresh salad around with loads of water and lots of splashing in slow mo LOL.
Except even your Leek looks more inviting than Pizza Hut ;-)
  • David de Groot said:
Leeks are good Louise ;-) (you can tell by the number of people at pubs that rush off to take them)

    Thanks Id :)

Might have got me on that one Greg, I am unfamiliar with this Welsh school of flash photography.

    Neat eh, Elisha?

Thanks Shaun - relatively easy (takes patience and an area you don't mind that gets wet)

hehehehe yeah Pizza Hut is purely there for when there is absolutely nothing else to eat... even then, it might be better to starve ;-)

Ah, I was sadly (?) unaware that leeks had a Welsh background. ;-)

they are the flora emblem of wales i believe - not sure if its official but widely accepted.

Well I'll be, it is too:

"The national flower of Wales is the daffodil, which is traditionally worn on St. David’s Day. The vegetable called leek is also considered to be a traditional emblem of Wales."

Great title, emphasises the work that goes into something like this. Your description is also very good. Superb shot, thanks for the inspiration, I've got to try something like this on the weekend. Cheers!

You're welcome :) 'twas fun. I've been reading Strobist recently and have been inspired to play with the flash more.

    This is way cool, Dave!
Funny that you used a leek here and not a slice of lemon or something :o)
  • David de Groot said:
Thanks David :) You know, you're not the only person to have made the observation about the leek.... but it was what was at hand. For a lemon I'd have to have cut one.

Thanks :) I'm keen to try a balloon popping or something like that, as soon as I can work out how to pop it remotely...

connect a remote controlled dart gun to the camera flash slave circuit and kapow!

  • David de Groot said:
Ah well there's the problem - I am the flash slave circuit at the moment. No fancy remote triggers here, I just hit the "Test Flash" button on the back of the flash unit, hand-held where I want it. My ancient Canon SpeedLite 188A is lacking in any fancy remote capabilities.
