Adelaide St

taken from the walkway that leads to Central Station.

Probably the best of the shots from tonight, since at least this one I could rest the camera on a ledge and lower the iso somewhat, resulting in far less noise.

Yes, I think I like this one best too. In fact I like it a lot :-)
You got a great star effect on the street lamps too - was this intentional?
  • David de Groot said:
Mostly, yes. I wanted a slower shutter speed and greater depth of field than I could manage hand held, so I placed the camera on a ledge and wound up the aperture to f/8, which of course gives a more star like quality to point light sources.

Basically, this was a re-visit of this previous shot (taken with the S2)

I didn't know that about small aperture and star effect on point light sources - I'll have to remember that one.

The movement in this image is really nicely captured David. Also, the fact that 4 lights with the star effect are of different sizes/locations works nicely too to add depth.

This is awe-inspiring. Excellent blend of color and technical know-how. It's funny because I never look at my settings. I just take a shot and hope it comes out. I never ask question about how to get a star effect from the lights. I really need to sit down with my manual and figure these things out. Again, great picture.

    I like the blur.

And to get really technical on you David, the number of flairs in the star shape is related to the number of blades used in the aperture curtain in the lens. You'll notice that these "stars" have 6 arms, and the Canon 18-55mm kit lens has 6 blades on it's aperture curtain. (which also means the bokeh is pretty crap on this lens, but you get that in a kit lens).

Thanks Melissa :) The only thing I would have liked more is if the sky had been a tad brighter and thus more blue, but it was getting later by the time I got there.

Thanks Mark ! Yeah I vary between just shooting and thinking about the effect I'm after. Sometimes there just isn't time to set everything up properly and you just need to go with the moment, other times, when I'm not rushing myself, I can think more about what it is I'm trying to achieve.

Thanks, or should that be Croak!, Gothic Toad.

A bit of blur goes a long way Brian :)

Man this one is just great. You wouldn't believe how many times I've stood in that exact same spot and wished I had my camera with me.

Outstanding composition and night shot. Beautiful lighting and the street lights are wonderful. I'll try to remember about small aperture and star effect.

"You go places without your camera Sam ??"

Not any more, now i have a smaller and more manageable camera bag. My other one is huge and made walking though the city with it and changing lenses a pain in the rear end.

    Hey Thanks Margot :)

I'll ignore the comments from the peanut gallery... :P

The 6 Million Dollar Home eh Sam ? I didn't realise they had dividers inside, certainly the guy in the Crumpler store in town didn't point them out when I was last in there.

    :D Fun!

Cool shot Dave, I like the arrows in the middle lane... kinda like they are pointing along the lines that we were alrady looking along.... with the great perspective in the shot!
  • David de Groot said:
Thanks Alison :) Now if I had the ultra-wide lens I'm after, it might have been even more impressive ;-)

Yeah, the 6 mil home is great. I can fit pretty much all my gear at the moment into it. Even though they only reckon you can fit a body with battery grip and lens attached, another lens and a flash.

Only downside is they are a little pricey, but worth it to me. Also it doesnt scream out, "look at me, im a camera bag" which is the most important thing.

Nicely done Dave! I always appreciate it when something handily turns up for me to rest my camera on... made the shot in this case I suspect!
  • David de Groot said:
Yeah that helps for sure Sam.

Thanks Chris, definitely made the shot - no way I could have handheld this one.
